JVC HR-S9600U Super VHS VCR Review

JVC HR-S9600U Super VHS VCRI bought this VCR to replace my 10-year old trusty Sony VCR. Unfortunately, Sony no longer offered a VCR which allowed adjustment of audio levels during record ...
Overall, I've been pleased with this VCR after 3 years of ownership. The picture quality is OUTSTANDING, and the digital noise reduction is fantastic. At the time, JVC was the only manufacturer offering this feature - since then Sony and others have introduced similar features.
I only have 2 complaints with the model:
1) The tape transport mechanism is VERY sluggish and imprecise. When you hit STOP the tape "slides" for a few seconds before it actually stops. Same with PLAY, etc. Certainly NOT the dead-stop response that Sony VCRs offer. Apparently, this is a standard design flaw with all JVC VCRs. (I have not tested their latest models)
2) The cable box control does not allow channels greater than 199. Perhaps in 1999 when this VCR was released, that was acceptable. Today with the advent of Digital cable and satellite, you I can no longer use it to control my recording. (interestingly enough, my "lower end" Sony VCR which I purchased at the same time as this unit DOES allow channels up to 999)

Toshiba W704 6-Head Hi-Fi VCR Review

Toshiba W704 6-Head Hi-Fi VCRI struggled with the purchase of a VCR recently because my 14 year old top-of -the line Sears (made by Samsung) was beginning to get tired and worn out. That VCR had a minimum of 1-3 hours of use per day since new. Needless to say I wanted a replacement that was of equal quality anddurability.I found the features of this unit to be the most logical andusable in its class.
This unit is truly unique and a breeze to set up. You just plug in your TV connections and then the VCR to the electricaloutlet and walk away from it for an hour. The front display will note thatit is in AUTO mode and it automatically sets your channels and the clock! What could be easier? How about setting up the remote to operate my ZenithTV (the only time I really needed the manual)? Hold down the remote'sprogram key and type in the 2-digit code and viola - it's done.
Now forthe operation of the VCR: I instructed my 7 and 4 year old sons to studythe remote and the VCR front panel; they were watching movies in a coupleof minutes and later showed their Grandpa how everything works. It's thatsimple.
We didn't realize how much we were missing with a stereo two-headmachine and then stepping up to a six-head HI-FI.The picture quality andsound clarity is extraordinary!I am a fanatic with sound and this unitreally rocks.Considering the flexibility of a VCR compared to DVDs atthis point in the technology cycle -if you are looking for high qualitysound, picture, ease of set up/use and over-all quality BUY THIS VCR. Don'tbe fooled into going cheap on a VCR, if you do, you will spend more moneyover time with less quality and more frustration.Ordering the unit wasalso a snap, it arrived sooner than I expected, double-boxed and packedvery well. This model carries one-year, parts and labor warranty as notedin the manual. Go for it!

Product Description:
Toshiba's W704, a mid-priced 6-head hi-fi stereo VCR, is appropriate for cable and satellite users who want to get the best out of the standard VHS format, but don't require S-VHS Quasi Playback. Two of this VCR's six heads are 19-micron heads, which will yield nearly the same picture quality in the 6-hour EP mode as they will in the 2-hour SP mode. Unlike 4-head VCRs with 19-micron heads, the W704 has a full set of four standard heads that are optimized for SP mode, so you don't sacrifice image quality in SP mode to get better EP pictures. MTS and SAP reception enable you to soak in the stereo and foreign-language signals broadcast by many major TV stations. The shuttle control on the front panel makes precise fast-forwarding and rewinding as simple as turning the dial. Programming the W704's 6-event/1-year timer is easy using VCR Plus+ with C3. The "C3" denotes that the VCR Plus+ can control your cable box or satellite receiver when recording. Finally, the glow-in-the-dark buttons on the universal remote won't leave you fumbling in the darkness when the phone rings while you're in the middle of a movie. Standard features include Toshiba's V3 design, which features "flying" video preamps mounted right in the video head drum for lower noise. The deck also offers auto clock set and auto head cleaning. Common among VCRs of this caliber - yet still very convenient for camcorder and video game enthusiasts - are the front-panel A/V inputs.

Sony SLV-N88 4-Head Hi-Fi Stereo VCR Review

Sony SLV-N88 4-Head Hi-Fi Stereo VCRFirst of all. Reading all the previous reviews about the clock being 21 sec in a week late and others gets me thinking. Personally, don't care about seconds per week ratio.
Next- playability of some tapes. I used to own a video store so I still have lots of tapes left: old, used, retaped. Everything works. But one thing is for sure. I paid $89 for this VCR and I know what to expect. I also have Mitsubishi top of the line , bought 4 years ago for almost $360. And tell you the truth, you cant expect your Mercedes 290to perform like Mercedes 500. The same with this VCR - it gets the job done. It even played the tape that I couldn't play on my Mitsu(the screen was blue, because this Mitsu it very sensitive to some kind of tape imperfection). So it's well worth the money and don't wory that it doesn't have S-VHS. All the tapes hollywood still makes is VHS , because it's standard. and there will not be otherwise.
So if the price is right for you , just get it.
I'd give it 5 stars but it's just not a five star product.

Product Description:
Housed in a silver chassis that complements Sony's Wega line of TVs and components, the SLV-N88 four-head VCR is a favorite among people who enjoy a little style with their substance. The unit's four dual azimuth recording heads deliver a superior picture in both SP and the slower EP mode--the latter nearly matching the former in clarity. In addition, the device employs hi-fi stereo recording and MTS stereo TV reception, allowing the user to enjoy optimal audio for both recording and playback. Other features include commercial skip, which automatically advances the tape 30 seconds at the touch of a button; flash rewind, which completely rewinds a T-120 tape in a mere 60 seconds; and an eight-event/one month programmable timer.
Users will appreciate the plug-and-play setup, which lets people use the VCR right out of the box (the channels tune and the clock sets automatically). The multilingual onscreen display also enhances the user experience, as does the index scan, which helps locate a specific program on the tape without fuss. Rather than manual tracking, the SLV-N88 offers sophisticated digital tracking that automatically smoothes playback. The VCR also includes auto head cleaning, a parental lock feature, and front AV inputs for connecting to a camcorder or game system. In addition, the SLV-N88 is Energy Star compliant.

Sony SLV-N700 Hi-Fi VHS VCR Review

Sony SLV-N700 Hi-Fi VHS VCRThe quality and dependability of SONY's VCRs over the past few years were in a terrible state of decline. SONY made some very good VCRs in the past. SONY's SLV-N700 Hi-Fi VHS VCR demonstrates a continuing genuine effort to return to the type of quality product they were once known for. This unit records very well and playback of pre-recorded tapes look excellent as well. What really impressed me was the playback image of EP recordings. This sounds a little unbelievable but black & white movies recorded in EP look better than those recorded in SP.This unit also has an incredibly fast rewind. I also found the Quasi S-VHS playback to be very indispensable. If you have a collection of S-VHS recordings this unit plays them back with very good results.

Product Description:
Don't miss a minute of favorite shows or tapes. Sony's WEGA-styled SLV-N700 is packed with convenience features designed to simplify recording and viewing, from one-month, eight-event advance programming to commercial skip, instant replay, and everything from auto digital tracking to auto tuner preset and auto head cleaning. Your camcorder or gaming console plugs right into the SLV-N700's front panel for hassle-free connections.
This model's four-head design ensures smooth slow-motion play (forward and reverse) and clear still-frame images, and with hi-fi sound the unit records and plays back stereo audio tracks. If you route the stereo output to an AV receiver, you can even enjoy four-channel (left, center, right, and monaural surround) Dolby Pro Logic mixes from TV and Dolby-encoded cassettes. The SLV-N700's dual-azimuth construction uses two pairs of recording heads rather than one, each optimized for a specific mode (one for SP recording, the other for EP), while 19-micron heads deliver the clearest possible picture when recording or viewing in EP (extended-play) mode.
For setup, a single button calls up an onscreen menu to guide you through VCR setup, including parameters for features like menu language select, satellite receiver or cable-box control setup, and auto tuner presets. The VCR automatically marks the tape with an index signal at the point where each recording begins so you can easily scan back to the start of a recording using these signals as a reference.
VCR Plus+ simplifies programming, as it lets you set the VCR to record programs based on common PlusCode numbers found in the TV listings of over 600 newspapers and TV Guide--no more worrying about start and end times for your most frequently recorded shows. ChildLoc circuitry keeps small hands from going where only tapes belong. With the handy one-hour timer back-up, the VCR saves timer data for up to one hour in the event of a power loss. The unit comes with a multi-brand TV/VCR remote control.
What's in the Box
VCR, remote control, batteries, an audio/video interconnect (coaxial video cable with F-type connector), user's manual, warranty information.

GE VG4270 4-Head Hi-Fi VCR Review

GE VG4270 4-Head Hi-Fi VCRI read the reviews here before buying the GE VG4270 4-Head Hi-Fi VCR.I was slightly apprehensive when I read someone's review that stated the vcr made an annoying tick tick sound when played, however I purchased it anyway. For the amazing price I had nothing to lose since I could return it.It is excellent and it does not make a ticking sound, and I bought two of them, one for someone else.... The quality is superior to other more expensive models, I had a VCR that I paid ($) for and it died. This one has more features than my other one.I am very satisified and recommend this to everyone !!

Product Description:
GE's compact, affordable VG4270 offers everything from 4-head VHS playback and stereo sound to commercial scan and front-panel audio/video inputs for your camcorder or gaming console. The VG4270's 4-head design ensures smooth slow-motion play (forward and reverse) and clear still-frame images. If you route the unit's stereo output to an audio/video surround receiver, you can even enjoy 4-channel (left, center, right, and monaural surround) Dolby Pro Logic mixes from TV and Dolby-encoded videocassettes.
Commercial scan speeds past unwanted portions of your tape in 30-second increments for each press of the search button. Index search lets you zip right to a tape's index points (a new point is marked each time you begin recording). Express Recording (XPR) starts recording a program you're watching. You can then set the VCR to automatically stop recording after a desired length of time.
VCR Plus+ simplifies advance programming, and auto clock set means you'll never be confronted with the dreaded flashing "12:00" on the display. Other features include adjustable display brightness, a trilingual onscreen display, auto channel set up, auto/manual tracking, Pro-Tect Plus locking (great for use as a parental control or as a safeguard for important timer recordings), auto play, auto repeat, and zero search.

FACTORY REFURBISHED Pokemon Pikachu VCR Video Cassette Recorder with 19 Micron Head and 2 Remotes (1 Pikachu Stuff Toy Remote) Review

FACTORY REFURBISHED Pokemon Pikachu VCR Video Cassette Recorder with 19 Micron Head and 2 RemotesI bought this because it has a co-axial connection setup. But the vcr isn't reliable.Sometimes it will not take a tape at all; sometimes it starts recording but then mysteriously shuts down almost immediately and ejects the tape. And sometimes it takes the tape and records just fine.It has never recorded two separate programs-it records the first but the second, some hours later, is just ejected, and without erasing the program on the menu. That has to be done separately. All in all I cannot recommend this product-whoever rebuilt it didn't do it properly and it has to be "wiggled" to get it to work at all.

Sanyo VWM-710 Hi-Fi 4 Head Hi-Fi Stereo VCR Video Cassette Recorder with TV Guardian Feature (NO MANUAL INCLUDED, BRAND NEW VCR & REMOTE ONLY) Review

Sanyo VWM-710 Hi-Fi 4 Head Hi-Fi Stereo VCR Video Cassette Recorder with TV Guardian FeatureI'M GOING TO MAKE IT CLEAR THAT MY VCR IS THE SANYO 700, NOT THE 710. BUT I BELIEVE IT'S CLOSE ENOUGH TO GIVE YOU SOME IDEA, INSTEAD OF HAVING NO REVIEWS AT ALL:

The Sanyo 700 Vcr is one of electronics best kept secrets. The good looking 4 head Vcr with 19 Micronized heads plays, and records beautifully all tapes weather new or old, slow speeds or fast speeds. The video is excellent, on sp, ep or slp recorded tapes.

The ep (slow speed), gets 6 taped hours on a t-120, 8hrs on a 160. The unit records in 2 speeds, sp and ep. (and that's all you need)
It has self cleaning heads anduniversal remote which also runs my Sony Trinitron TV.

The sound is very clear and excellent due to it's hi-fi component. You can actually see the tape counter on screen if you depress the ck counter button. And unlike many vcr's like my sharp, it leaves the counter on screen while you're fast forwarding or rewinding so you don't have to guess where you are. The exception is when you're fast forwarding or rewinding when the movie is on screen. Then the counter disappears, but you don't get those vertical lines across the screen like you get with cheaper vcr's when you perform that operation.

The machine has auto-tracking to adjust the picture for you, but it also has manual tracking if you want to play with it further- again, something most vcr's don't have - both tracking systems.

It plays tapes recorded from other vcr's perfectly. And it works great on dubbing.

Now on the flip side, as of 2010, Sanyo, no longer provides any customer support for vcr's like panasonic and sharpe still do - even old ones. But I don't think you'll need it, because everything is very clear and simple in the manual.

There's no menu button on the Sanyo 700 panel as there is on my sharpe h982u vcr, (which I also reviewed on this website). That means if the remote breaks you cannot access the internal menu system, set up, channell search, timer record, clock settings. This is about the biggest drawback I see. But if that happens, wallah, you get another remote!

The remote is slow to program the timer record. When setting the time for the record, you can only move the minutes hand and not the hour hand. You can program for up to one year ahead of time.Of course if you just press the record button on the remote to record what's on screen, that takes 1 second.

The rewind and fast forward speed (when just rewinding tape for example without viewing the picture) is slow compared to other vcr's I've had. However, in light of how many vcr's eat up tapes and how many tapes have snapped, I believe that Sanyo purposely reduced the speed for tape safety reasons to prevent the destruction of the tape. It would take a few minutes to rewind a tape though.

Sanyo makes the 700 and 800 series vcr's. The 800's are the cheaper ones and I don't recommend them - too many problems. The 700's are better. The model # 710 sanyo retailed for $229.00. This 700 Sanyo vcr looks and acts more like the 710. It does not look like the 800's. I'm telling you this because I don't know what the original cost of this machine was, I got it as a gift, brand new in the box.
------------------------------------
MY BUYING ADVICE ON VCRS.
In my own buying experience, Panasonic and Toshiba's have held well for 10 years of use. Sharp makes one with a super sharp picture function which plays older vcr tapes better. Some people rave about Sony, but some reviews on the web say some models are better than others and reliability / durability have been the main problems. The off brands are usually not good - stick to major brands.

Look for vcrs that have hi-fi sound, not mono sound, with or without self cleaning heads, can record and play in at least 2 speeds, (fast and slow) sp/slp or sp/ep, has a remote, manual and are new or not too old, or old but lightly used. The older ones are built better.

These stand alone vcrs play much better and hold up much longer than the vcr drives in the dvd/vcr combos. They are not that difficult to hook up to a cable box, digital converter box and are still the cheapest way to record shows. Vcr tapes are 99 cents now. And can hold 6 to 8 hours of recordings.

I personally have two vcr's, (one sanyo, one sharp) one sony dvd player, all connected and hooked up to a digital converter box and a Sony Trinitron Tube TV. And all work perfectly. if you have any other questions about vcr's, buying, operations or connections, please , email me at abcsoaps@cs.com.

Final Note:
Vcr's play okay on the newer digital tv's, but play much better on an old analog tv that was designed for it. Of course if you're a dvd person all of this is null and void for ya. But remember when Dvd's are scratched or get finger prints on them, they malfunction too.

Good luck.

Panasonic PV-V4520 4-Head Hi-Fi VCR Review

Panasonic PV-V4520 4-Head Hi-Fi VCRThis is a very solid VCR.It does a good job at recording as well as playback.Programming is very, very easy--I didn't even need the manual to figure it out, there are on screen directions which are real easy tofollow. The only weak part of this unit is the remote. The channel andvolume buttons are really small, so it is a little difficult to use atfirst, especially in the dark. This isn't a real big deal to me, but itwould be nice if these buttons were bigger. It is also nice that you canuse all the functions of the VCR without the remote, which is nice forthose of use who have the tendency to lose the remote.

I have approx 3000 movies on vhs.I wanted something to guarantee watchability in the future, as things go digital.Makes no sense to re-purchase everything I have on vhs.If you are like me, you also purchased another phonograph and needles to ensure you can play your vinyl records too. That aside, you will not be disappointed with the quality (4 heads!) and the user friendly set up.No manual needed.Onscreeen display, and I cannot believe how light this unit is!Size is compact and fits everywhere I have put it so far.
