Sony SLV-N55 4-Head Hi-Fi VCR Review

1) Like someone else wrote, I too get this disturbance at regular intervals when playing back with the SLV-N55. For me it occurs with some recordings made by other VCRs and pre-recorded videos.
Every 5 to 10 seconds, the picture will jitter vertically for a second. I played around with the tracking to no avail. If it's because of the condition of the tapes or the recordings are a year old, that's still no excuse because these same particular tapes play perfectly stable on my other 3 Panasonic VCRs, and it should have no problem with pre-recorded tapes ESPECIALLY.
(Side Note: I have a Panasonic PV-V4522 that makes recordings with a severe vertical jitter on older tapes, leaving you with a bad recording, but if I re-record over the same tape at the same speed, that recording will be stable... go figure)
A hyper-sensitive VCR that requires mint condition tapes to play a decent picture (in the Panasonic's case, to record one)is not very useful then, because you'll WANT to watch and use your tapes and videos in the future, and you can't store your cassettes in a vacuum, electro-magnetic and gravity free chamber or something.
2) While so far the SLV-N55 has no problems playing back recordings made by itself, the quality of those recordings is not to my liking. It seems to record with more color bleed than other VCRs. Also there is this noticeable outline to the right of every object in the picture, resembling a slight "ghost" effect like with poor reception on a TV with rabbit ears or turning the sharpness too high on your set. (I get digital cable)
If this is what 19 Micron quality is all about, then no thank you. I had an Optimus 19 Micron VCR long ago and while playback of it's recordings were fine, playing back of those same recordings on another VCR was very grainy.
They should just keep everything the standard 26 Microns and all will be fine. So from now on I will avoid the feature "19 Micron Heads" like the plague. : P

JVC HR-S9600U Super VHS VCR Review

I bought this VCR to replace my 10-year old trusty Sony VCR. Unfortunately, Sony no longer offered a VCR which allowed adjustment of audio levels during record ...
Overall, I've been pleased with this VCR after 3 years of ownership. The picture quality is OUTSTANDING, and the digital noise reduction is fantastic. At the time, JVC was the only manufacturer offering this feature - since then Sony and others have introduced similar features.
I only have 2 complaints with the model:
1) The tape transport mechanism is VERY sluggish and imprecise. When you hit STOP the tape "slides" for a few seconds before it actually stops. Same with PLAY, etc. Certainly NOT the dead-stop response that Sony VCRs offer. Apparently, this is a standard design flaw with all JVC VCRs. (I have not tested their latest models)
2) The cable box control does not allow channels greater than 199. Perhaps in 1999 when this VCR was released, that was acceptable. Today with the advent of Digital cable and satellite, you I can no longer use it to control my recording. (interestingly enough, my "lower end" Sony VCR which I purchased at the same time as this unit DOES allow channels up to 999)

Sony SLV-N88 4-Head Hi-Fi Stereo VCR Review

First of all. Reading all the previous reviews about the clock being 21 sec in a week late and others gets me thinking. Personally, don't care about seconds per week ratio.
Next- playability of some tapes. I used to own a video store so I still have lots of tapes left: old, used, retaped. Everything works. But one thing is for sure. I paid $89 for this VCR and I know what to expect. I also have Mitsubishi top of the line , bought 4 years ago for almost $360. And tell you the truth, you cant expect your Mercedes 290to perform like Mercedes 500. The same with this VCR - it gets the job done. It even played the tape that I couldn't play on my Mitsu(the screen was blue, because this Mitsu it very sensitive to some kind of tape imperfection). So it's well worth the money and don't wory that it doesn't have S-VHS. All the tapes hollywood still makes is VHS , because it's standard. and there will not be otherwise.
So if the price is right for you , just get it.
I'd give it 5 stars but it's just not a five star product.

Sony CFD-S350 CD/Cassette Portable Boombox (Silver) Review

I had my old Sony Boombox for 11 years & it finally gave out.I saw this one; it looked nice and had all the same basics as my old one.I needed a simple player & this one fit the bill.Many others look too "space age" to me.

When I got it, I put in a CD and it didn't sound like it had much bass.I turned on the Mega Bass & it didn't sound any different.At least with my old Sony you could tell when the Mega Bass was on.Because of the lack of bass I think it's an OK player.

I took my children to a local play gym/arcade, and they had the Sony CFD-F10 there.It sounded great!Sad to say, it makes me wish I did a little more comparing, the extra $10-$15 dollars seems worth it.

Sony CFD-E90 CD Radio Cassette Recorder (White) Review

Purchased it to use on job sites; didn't need anything too fancy, the smaller size is what attracted me. The cassette feature along with CD seemed like a nice bonus.

However, after one week the CD Player would not play a disc, instead read "no disc" even when one was inserted. I later have read where this is a common failure with this unit. I returned it and tried another, but this one gave the "no disc" error right out of the box. Very disappointing product from Sony.

I ended up returning it and got something else entirely. Don't waste your time on this product.

I bought the Sangean ATS-818ACS because it was recommended and because of its programmable cassette recorder. I was especially interested in listening to shortwave broadcasts for the first time and to recording AM/FM programs that I miss because I work nights. From Day 1, the radio was a pain to use. The manual was written in Taiwan by someone who could barely read and write English. Shortwave reception was dreadful, even after purchasing an outside antenna at Radio Shack. The programmable cassette recorder doesn't include a cut-off time, so the recorder runs until the tape ends, and you can only record one broadcast. Plus, the radio comes on every day at the programmed time until you reset a new time, then the radio comes on daily at that new time. The manual doesn't explain how to avoid that annoyance. ...

Sony Walkman Digital Tuning Weather FM/AM Stereo Cassette Player (Silver) Review

This is the same item as the FX-290, now with a W added. Only difference is the absence of the TV audio band, which will be irrelevent next February. I ve had three of these walkmans in the past couple of years. One shattered upon impact to the ground. I didn't have the case on it, and with the other two the fast forward button, which I use quite a bit fell off.

That being said, this is probably the greatest walkman I ve owned. The radio cassette player is a dying breed and I m glad to see Sony put out a new version of an old favorite. With 35 hours on one AA battery, this is one of the great values. I still have hundreds of cassette tapes that I have taped from XM the last couple of years, and I still take my walks listening to those. Transferring to a CD is an option,but its too much of a bother. With the belt clip its so easy to just walk listening to a cassette, even though the sound quality is not as good as a CD,but it fits my purposes fine.

With AM and FM and all the presets, and a weather band this is a nice value for $30 and free shipping. I m glad I still have my other two units without the fast forward button. This is becoming a relic, and I want to make sure I have this walkman for some time to come. No MP3 for me. I m satisfied with this unit.

Sony CFDG700CP CD Boombox Radio Cassette Recorder Review

This is by far one of the best sounding CFD-G series boombox from Sony to date. With all those years experimenting with different subwoofer sizes and enclosure volume and bass reflex port lengths, Sony has finally found the right equation in the 700CP. To call this machine a boombox may be a bit of an insult, given the kind of sound it can deliver with its enormous speaker system and a powerful bi-amplifier.

The CFD-G700CP is huge. This is a boombox that requires so much table space it makes your Micro Hi-Fi (if you have one) look really, mirco. I'm sure some will get turned off by its loud and aggresive look, but the teenagers and those young at heart will love it. Especially the sound.

The 700CP can pump out so much bass, if you have not seen the unit yourself, you'd be wondering if you're listening to the bass sounds from a mid-sized bookshelf Hi-Fi. Of course, all that bass is worth nothing if the system can only deliver loud punchy bass with muffled mids and highs. No. The 700CP delivers everything from somewhere around 80Hz all the way to 16KHz, all in great clarity thanks to its Bi-Amplifier. The two full range speakers and metal tweeters are driven by a stereo amplifier used primarily to deliver mids and highs, and the 13cm subwoofer is pumping air through the front dual bass-reflex ports using a dedicated bass amplifier, keeping the mids and highs completely uninterrupted.

Even at high volume, the sound from the subwoofer remains solid and deep, and if you think there is just way too much bass, the subwoofer has two level settings for you to keep all that rumbling under control. You can also turn the bass amplifier off completely to listen exclusively to the sounds from the mid-high speakers.

The line-in port is neatly tucked away at the lower right hand side of the system with a built-in line in plug and also a jack, so you can either connect a portable music player directly to the device using the built-in line in plug (3.5mm stereo plug) or connect anything else to the device using a cable with a 3.5mm stereo plug on one end.

This boombox is of course missing a back-lit LCD, which is strange considering there was an earlier generation G series (G55 I think) that came with a red LED backlighting. Also, the cassette deck is a single-direction deck, so if you're still playing alot of cassette tapes, you'll be a little disappointed by the lack of the auto-reverse feature still found on most mid-range to high-end Micro Hi-Fis. The device also supports MP3 playback as well, but does not support Sony's proprietary Atrac3 files.

Hear it to believe it. This machine trumps Sony's CMT-EH10, CMT-NEZ33, CMT-NEZ55 plus alot of those self-proclaimed micro hi-fi systems out there. You won't be dissapointed. And to top it off, it runs on 8 D-size batteries (even the cheap Manganese ones) when you can't find an AC outlet or when there's a power outage.

Sony CFDS01 CD Radio Cassette Recorder - Silver Review

I am a teenager who insists on records for home use, cassettes for portability.That being said, upon finding this boombox and using it for a day, and it looks promising.I bought it at Target to replace a Sony CFD-E75 from the late 1990s (admittedly a more upscale boombox) and this one holds its own.I have never had trouble with a Sony.Responding to another reviewer, the STEREO/MONO function does have a purpose; stereo FM reception is more sensitive than mono, so when a station is distorted, setting it to MONO can completely eliminate the fuzz, or at least improve it significantly.Trust me, this button IS useful.I took off a star mainly because of a few minor details, but it does a good job.The bass is a little lacking, but it is by no means intolerable.Just be sure the MegaBass is on.Perhaps hooking it up to PC speakers or a stereo amplifier would make it sound a little fuller.A good use would be on a desk, a medium-sized room, or in the kitchen/garage.The CD player works fine, as does the cassette player and radio.One area to note is that the cassette does NOT automatically stop when fast-forwarding or rewinding, although it does play to a stop.Unlike the CFD-E75, it does not automatically switch functions (for example, you must press to listen to a CD, whereas some will automatically switch to the CD player whenis pressed) and does not have a remote, although you lazy people know you really don't need one.The cassette records wonderfully.It gives a good clear sound, and my full-size tape deck shows that its recording levels are set at a good maximum level for best quality.It also comes with a replaceable cord, so if you either damage it or lose it, just get a new one at RadioShack.A good boombox for a good price.

This is pretty much the perfect tape recorder for interviews, whether live or phone -- sturdy but light for carrying, with plenty of bells and whistles but a snap to learn to use. (However, inserting tapes isslightly harder than in some other machines.) You can choose slow-speed recording to double the length of your tape (e.g., get two hours of talk on a 60-minute tape), which minimizes interrupting the flow of the interview to change sides or tapes. On playback, a speed-control dial lets you control speed and tone of speech -- you can slow down a fast jabberer to transcribe, or speed up to chipmonk-voices past the less useful chatter without missing anything. Plugging in the adapter spares the batteries when transcribing, i.e. when hitting the "pause" button instead of "stop" for interruptions that last longer than anticipated. Sound quality is fine for talk. Not much machine-hiss, and even less on slow speed than on regular speed. Much easier to change batteries than on my previous tape recorder(another Sony which finally died after 25 years of service). Haven't tried this machine for music.
