Sony Portable 1-Piece AM/FM/CD Cassette Boombox (CFD-E75) Review

Sony Portable 1-Piece AM/FM/CD Cassette BoomboxI just received this cute little number in red for a gift! It looked too small to be functional but I was pleasantly surprised! The sound quality is fabulous and it reaches all areas of my condo. Not only do you get radio but cd, cassette, and a clock radio!!! Now for once in my life I can chose what I want to hear when I wake up or as I go to sleep.
I found this Sony so portable that I have taken it to several picnics and other outside events. It tucks nicely into my car. In my bedroom, it does not overpower anything else-perfect size!
Another plus is the availability of headsets in case I want to crank the tunes in the middle of the night and not disturb my elderly neighbors.
The price is great, features fabulous and colors spectacular so what are you waiting for?

Pyle Home PT649D Dual Cassette Deck Review

Pyle Home PT649D Dual Cassette DeckI knew it didn't have auto-reverse when I was looking at cassette decks, so it was no surprise.I was a little leery not having heard of the Pyle name, but after trying it for a while now, I am happy with the sound, recording quality, and it has proven to be satisfactory.I also found out more from the website: www.pyleaudio.com
From my experience it is good quality and reasonably priced.

Sony CFD-S350 CD/Cassette Portable Boombox (Silver) Review

Sony CFD-S350 CD/Cassette Portable BoomboxI had my old Sony Boombox for 11 years & it finally gave out.I saw this one; it looked nice and had all the same basics as my old one.I needed a simple player & this one fit the bill. Many others look too "space age" to me.

When I got it, I put in a CD and it didn't sound like it had much bass.I turned on the Mega Bass & it didn't sound any different. At least with my old Sony you could tell when the Mega Bass was on.Because of the lack of bass I think it's an OK player.

I took my children to a local play gym/arcade, and they had the Sony CFD-F10 there. It sounded great!Sad to say, it makes me wish I did a little more comparing, the extra $10-$15 dollars seems worth it.

PANRR930 - Analog Micro Cassette Recorder/Transcriber Model RR930 Review

PANRR930 - Analog Micro Cassette Recorder/Transcriber Model RR930I ordered this transcriber but ended up returning it.Everything seemed to work well but I couldn't tolerate the noise the tape made during the auto-rewind.This transcriber requires that the play button is engaged in order for the foot pedal to operate.Because of this, as you let off the foot pedal and the tape rewinds just a bit to allow you to catch up, the tape screeches in your ear as it does so.I couldn't concentrate enough to remember what I was typing. Not a good feature.Probably wears tapes down, too, since it is under that stress as it rewinds.

Sony TCM-400DV Pressman Standard Cassette Recorder Review

Sony TCM-400DV Pressman Standard Cassette RecorderI love the voice activation feature of this recorder- it works like a charm. There is rather high background hum- I haven't tried playing back with noise reduction but that might do the trick.I could only get it to work on 1.5V batteries and not my 1.2V NiMH rechargeables, even though fully charged- a disadvantage though 1.5V rechargeable alkaline batteries are apparently available. This little recorder otherwise filled the bill very nicely.

Sony Walkman Digital Tuning Weather FM/AM Stereo Cassette Player (Silver) Review

Sony Walkman Digital Tuning Weather FM/AM Stereo Cassette PlayerThis is the same item as the FX-290, now with a W added. Only difference is the absence of the TV audio band, which will be irrelevent next February. I ve had three of these walkmans in the past couple of years. One shattered upon impact to the ground. I didn't have the case on it, and with the other two the fast forward button, which I use quite a bit fell off.

That being said, this is probably the greatest walkman I ve owned. The radio cassette player is a dying breed and I m glad to see Sony put out a new version of an old favorite. With 35 hours on one AA battery, this is one of the great values. I still have hundreds of cassette tapes that I have taped from XM the last couple of years, and I still take my walks listening to those. Transferring to a CD is an option, but its too much of a bother. With the belt clip its so easy to just walk listening to a cassette, even though the sound quality is not as good as a CD,but it fits my purposes fine.

With AM and FM and all the presets, and a weather band this is a nice value for $30 and free shipping. I m glad I still have my other two units without the fast forward button. This is becoming a relic, and I want to make sure I have this walkman for some time to come. No MP3 for me. I m satisfied with this unit.

Sony CFDG700CP CD Boombox Radio Cassette Recorder Review

Sony CFDG700CP CD Boombox Radio Cassette RecorderThis is by far one of the best sounding CFD-G series boombox from Sony to date. With all those years experimenting with different subwoofer sizes and enclosure volume and bass reflex port lengths, Sony has finally found the right equation in the 700CP. To call this machine a boombox may be a bit of an insult, given the kind of sound it can deliver with its enormous speaker system and a powerful bi-amplifier.

The CFD-G700CP is huge. This is a boombox that requires so much table space it makes your Micro Hi-Fi (if you have one) look really, mirco. I'm sure some will get turned off by its loud and aggresive look, but the teenagers and those young at heart will love it. Especially the sound.

The 700CP can pump out so much bass, if you have not seen the unit yourself, you'd be wondering if you're listening to the bass sounds from a mid-sized bookshelf Hi-Fi. Of course, all that bass is worth nothing if the system can only deliver loud punchy bass with muffled mids and highs. No. The 700CP delivers everything from somewhere around 80Hz all the way to 16KHz, all in great clarity thanks to its Bi-Amplifier. The two full range speakers and metal tweeters are driven by a stereo amplifier used primarily to deliver mids and highs, and the 13cm subwoofer is pumping air through the front dual bass-reflex ports using a dedicated bass amplifier, keeping the mids and highs completely uninterrupted.

Even at high volume, the sound from the subwoofer remains solid and deep, and if you think there is just way too much bass, the subwoofer has two level settings for you to keep all that rumbling under control. You can also turn the bass amplifier off completely to listen exclusively to the sounds from the mid-high speakers.

The line-in port is neatly tucked away at the lower right hand side of the system with a built-in line in plug and also a jack, so you can either connect a portable music player directly to the device using the built-in line in plug (3.5mm stereo plug) or connect anything else to the device using a cable with a 3.5mm stereo plug on one end.

This boombox is of course missing a back-lit LCD, which is strange considering there was an earlier generation G series (G55 I think) that came with a red LED backlighting. Also, the cassette deck is a single-direction deck, so if you're still playing alot of cassette tapes, you'll be a little disappointed by the lack of the auto-reverse feature still found on most mid-range to high-end Micro Hi-Fis. The device also supports MP3 playback as well, but does not support Sony's proprietary Atrac3 files.

Hear it to believe it. This machine trumps Sony's CMT-EH10, CMT-NEZ33, CMT-NEZ55 plus alot of those self-proclaimed micro hi-fi systems out there. You won't be dissapointed. And to top it off, it runs on 8 D-size batteries (even the cheap Manganese ones) when you can't find an AC outlet or when there's a power outage.

Panasonic RR-830 Desktop Cassette Transcriber / Recorder Review

Panasonic RR-830 Desktop Cassette Transcriber / RecorderIf you need to transcribe tapes for any reason at all you will save yourself hours of time and frustration by using a tape recorder/player intended for transcription - rather than your tape player alone. Panasonic has been making this good machine for more than a few years. To my knowledge it's the best value around.
The foot pedal is essential and easy to use, and allows you to stop, start, and back up your tape without taking your hands off your keyboard. The speaker is good, there is a tone adjustment, and in addition a headset (and this one is comfortable to wear)enables quiet transcribing - and improved intelligibility, because the sound of your keys going a mile a minute won't interfere with your hearing your taped material. Importantly, there is a control lever for tape speed - for "variable speech control," so that you can play your tape a bit slower, or faster (which you sometimes need, too).
There is a mic and a remote jack, andfast forward and fast reverse. A tape counter - your odometer - is helpful.Different little lights glow when you're taping, recording, when the machine is on. This is a straightforward, simple, and gimmickless machine that is very nicely put together. It measures a neat and tidy 8 by 10 inches, and packs up simply and with no fanfare. Indispensible - if you need to transcribe tapes.

MAXELL UR-120 Blank Audio Cassette Tape (4 pack) Review

MAXELL UR-120 Blank Audio Cassette TapeMaxell manufactures excellent 120 minute cassette tapes for all purpose general recording. As long as you have the right kind of equipment, these tapes record the sounds of record albums, radio shows, CD-Rs, people talking and just about anything else. These tapes have 120 minutes worth of blank recording tapes on them so there are 60 blank minutes for recording on each side. This is useful when recording one hour radio talk shows, for example.

The tapes allow you hours upon hours of listening enjoyment; and they take up very little room so they're easy to carry around with you.

There is one disappointment; however. These tapes cannot produce the same quality recording reproduction as a digitalized copy would give you. This means that if, hypothetically, you were to copy a CD-R onto another CD-R instead of a Maxell cassette tape, the quality of the sound on the CD-R copy would be sharper and clearer with less background noise than a Maxell cassette tape or any other brand of cassette tape could give you. Moreover, cassette tapes--especially the 120 minute kind with its thinner than usual tape--can break if not handled with care. These shortcomings frustrate me and therefore I will have to take off one star to make this a four star review.

The tapes have small pieces of plastic on the narrow top of each cassette which you can punch out easily so that accidental recording over an existing recording is impossible. If you decide to record over an original recording then you can merely place a small amount of regular tape over the hole. The cassette tape is now ready to record a fresh recording.

Overall, Maxell makes a superior choice when you want reliable cassette tapes to record music, the radio, people talking or anything you wish to record. I have used this brand for years and I cannot think of any major complaints. I highly recommend Maxell 120 minute cassette tapes for you to use when you need to record something onto a tape.

Sony CFDG505 CD Radio Cassette Recorder Boombox - Black Review

Sony CFDG505 CD Radio Cassette Recorder Boombox - BlackIt may seem like this is just another boombox in a never ending list of products whose faces change each year. On the surface this unit has cheap plastic parts, a big ugly 'X', and a silly little display that is about as exciting as a clock radio from 1982. The parts such as the CD door could easily be destroyed by a one-year-old (meaning, the child would not find it very difficult at all).

So, why would anyone want this $100 hunk of plastic? And why was the unit I purchased the very last one on the shelf? And why in the world is it missing features like "MP3 playback", and includes archaic features like "cassette deck"? You've got me! Fortunately, none of this matters.

For the purpose I bought it for--plugging in a portable music player--this is the box that puts all the others to shame. For such a low price I doubt there is any product in the world that delivers this kind of power and bass response. Featuring 2 4" speakers AND a 4" subwoofer this unit is ready to churn out a wide range of hip-hop, dance music, and much more.

To put it bluntly this 20 watt system (4W + 4W @ 3.2 ohms, 12 W @ 4 ohms) sounds huge and is a perfect companion for a device such as an iPod. I consider this product fierce competition to some of the weak sounding speaker systems alluringly sold along side iPods. With a simple cable (1/8" stereo to 1/8" stereo, NOT INCLUDED) you can plug any portable audio device into this boombox.

Sony has successfully filled this corner for years, offering cheap boomboxes with good bass, and the very important "line-in"! Oh, and it comes with a remote control, plays CD's and CDR's, and has an AM/FM radio. It's fairly heavy and has a deep footprint: 20 13/15 x 12 7/8 x 9 1/2" (530 x 327 x 241mm). Despite any oddness, for this price I can't imagine being happier.

Ion Tape2PC USB Cassette Deck Review

Ion Tape2PC USB Cassette DeckBefore I purchased the ION I read many articles on the Internet about how to transfer my audio cassettes to CD/iPod.I was overwhelmed by the technical terms, so I thought the ION would be the answer to my dreams:an easy, trouble-free solution.I assumed, that the ION (at it's steep price) would give me all I needed for simple, stress-free transfers.

I was wrong.The ION is a bad-investment for a number of reasons:

1.The ION is huge.
2.The software included with my ION was defective (Chinese characters appeared when I tried to load the application) -- and although the folders opened in English, they still didn't load.
3.The recording software for MAC users is available FREE on line.
4.If you have an old tape deck, or any cassette player with audio-out ports, you can go to Radio Shack (which I just did), buy a standard issue "Y" connector (1/8" stereo plug on one end and a white (male) and yellow (male) plug on the other end and (voila) you are done -- you now have precisely what the ION gives you:all for about about $15.

Believe me, I am no computer/tech genius.I'm a forty-something mom.Butbuying and plugging in the "Y" connector was super easy.

The ION merely gives you an old-fashioned, basic cassette deck, basic software (and, in the case of Audacity, something that is free from the Internet) and a USB connector (which does exactly the same thing as the $15 Radio Shack Y-connecter).

After that, you are on your own.I found the steepest learning curve was figuring out how to use the audio recording software. When I was stymied by the defective ION software, I discovered Garage Band was already on my iMac -- but I have since downloaded and use Audacity (on both my husband's PC and my iMAC).

The ION directions are so basic as to be nearly indecipherable. And as far as the Audacity software goes, the ION literature says something like:if you've never used audio recording software stick with the EZ converter software (which I believe only works on PCs).

Please also note that the ION literature doesn't tell you the next most important step you must take to make the ION work (goodness knows how any of the other reviewers were able to use their ION w/o a good working knowledge of their computer and/or audio recording. In short, you must go into your Control Panel (PC) or System Preference (MAC) and make sure you change your sound input option to in-line audio port (if using a Y-connector) or USB (if sticking with the ION).

Buyer Beware: think twice before you click to buy the ION.If you have a cassette player (or access to one) with output audio ports (most have them), you can buy the Y-connector and download the software for free.

To Amazon's credit, it appears they will refund my money and cover the cost of return shipment because of the defective software contained with the ION I purchased.

COBY CX-144 Portable AM/FM Cassette Player/Recorder Review

COBY CX-144 Portable AM/FM Cassette Player/RecorderI really urge everyone to stay far away from this product if you value your cassettes. Sony 10C60HFL 60-Minute HF Cassette Recorders (10-Brick) Review

Sony 10C60HFL 60-Minute HF Cassette RecordersHaving bought a couple of these tape bricks, I am very satisfied with the quality of the cassettes. The cassettes are made from a fairly brittle, clear plastic; they aren't very attractive (like the gray Maxell XL-II cases) and I'm not sure how much abuse they'll take without cracking, but I opened several up to make tape loops and they all went back together fine with no cracking / shattering. The tape itself is pretty thin (like I'm used to seeing in 90+ minute cassettes), so don't expect crystal-clear hi-fi sound quality or an exceptionally long life; these are totally servicable, though.I use them to make mixtapes for my car, to make cassette loops used in composing music, and to do day-to-day voice recording for school notes.

For a general purpose cassette, these are a fine choice. For more serious or archival recording, you'll want something with thicker tape - or a more modern format.

TAPE2USB Cassette To PC Recorder Review

TAPE2USB Cassette To PC RecorderI ordered this tape player from Amazon about three months ago and it's been on back order since then. It finally came in this week. This unit is going to replace an old Realistic SCT-17 cassette tape deck that bit the dust earlier this year. Not sure how old the Realistic deck was, but I bought it sometime back in the 80's. I've been looking for a new deck to replace it, but nowadays there isn't a whole lot to choose from. At least not something that doesn't cost more than I was willing to spend. Looked on Craigslist and found a number of old used decks - but was concerned that anything used would probably be prone to the same problems all my old tape decks did - old belts and/or dried out capacitors. So I wanted something new. This Tape2USB seemed to fit the bill. Like the Realistic deck I was using, it is a table top top-loading unit with a small footprint. And I like that you can connect it to a computer via a USB cable.

Ok, now for the meat of the review. This is just my initial thoughts and observations. I might come back and add to it later as I haven't spent a whole lot of time using the unit.

Number One: What is in the Box?

*Cassette Player / Recorder
*Power Adaptor (standard transformer)
*Stereo audio RCA cable
*Stereo audio RCA to mini-phone plug cable
*Two standard USB to USB "D" cables (same as what most printers today use)
*35 page manual
*Software CD

Not sure why there were two USB cables, you only need one. Think the second one might have been a mistake.

First impressions: The main unit itself is about the same size as a regular box of tissues. The first thing I noticed is that the quality of the materials is a bit inconsistent. The case of the unit seems to be of fairly good quality heavy duty plastic - similar to the materials in the tape deck that I'm replacing. What seems to be of slightly lesser quality are the knobs and switches. My impression of them is that they would look more at home on a cheap toy than on this unit. Maybe it's just the way they are shaped or the plastic they are made out of - but that is my impression. Over all I like the look of the unit - just not the knobs. The unit has slots on both ends of the case - I thought this was for ventilation, but when I first tried playing a tape in the unit I discovered that it has built-in speakers. The volume control knob for the speakers is on back of the unit, which I thought was a bit inconvenient, but once I set the volume level I pretty much left it there. Also on the back of the unit are RCA inputs / outputs for connecting the unit to regular stereo systems. On top of the unit are all the controls. There are the standard cassette tape player controls (rec, play, rew, f.fwd, stop/eject, and pause), plus there is a power button, cassette out / line in selector switch, and buttons to switch between normal & CrO2 tapes. There is also a REC Level knob. You also have a basic rec level indicator in the form of a light bar as well as a mechanical counter for tape length. Basically the same or similar setup to what I had on my previous tape desk.

Now for my thoughts on my experience of hooking this up to my computer. You really don't need to do anything special - like installing any drivers. Just connect the power transformer and the USB cable. The unit does come with the free audio software "Audacity" - which is pretty easy to install. About half of the manual details installing the software. I didn't need to as I already have it installed and have been using it for years. The version that ships with the unit is up-to-date, it's that same as the version I'm currently using. This is where I started having some problems. My off-the-shelf PC (which is running XP) came with just the basic audio circuit that comes on most mother boards and my system is running the basic OEM version of RealTek audio utilities. While the system recognized the USB connection, for some reason I couldn't get the audio from the cassette player to play on my computer's speakers. I can record the input in Audacity, just not monitor it while it was recording. Which makes the unit's built in speakers very useful. The problem I have seems to be with my system and not with the unit as I tried connecting to my laptop and didn't have the problem.

So far I'm happy with the operation of this tape deck and the quality of the output I'm getting from using a computer to record my old tape collection to MP3s.

Sony TCM-200DV Standard Cassette Voice Recorder Review

Sony TCM-200DV Standard Cassette Voice RecorderWouldn't you think a product whose title reads "with Dual Power Source" would actually include the AC adapter? Not in this case, although I can order one separately.

If you in fact want the AC adapter to arrive in the same package as your cassette recorder, be sure you order the Sony TCM-210DV, which I now understand is the model I should have ordered. The TCM-210DV appears to be identical to the TCM-200DV but includes the AC adapter.

Although I don't have the AC adapter I wanted as insurance for the occasions on which I record on tape, the recorder performs just fine on battery. I use it primarily to play audiobooks from the public library, because a Walkman or other play-only motor is not powerful enough for old, worn cassettes.

Product Description:
Sony's TCM-200DV cassette recorder offers a multitude of features which make it an excellent choice for a cassette voice recorder. The two channel, one track recorder promises accurate recording. For recording ease, Sony has installed double recording time and voice operated recording. The double recording time gives you the option of recording at a standard speed, or at half the standard speed, essentially giving you double the recording space. With voice operated record, you no longer have to worry about constantly shutting off and switching on the record button; with the first hint of sound, the TCM-200DV will begin recording. Sony's Sony-Matic automatic recording level control will keep your recordings at one constant level. Play-back editing or transcribing becomes more useful with this feature. If the internal microphone doesn't support your recording needs, simply plug in an external mic into the mic jack.
An essential playback feature is the playback speed control. With this adjustment, you can adjust the speed between thirty percent of normal and negative fifteen percent of normal. This is a great tool for those transferring interviews or lectures. If you find yourself fighting to hear the cassette player via the built-in speaker, plug earphones into the recorder and your troubles will be lessened. In fact, Sony has installed a L/R monaural earphone jack for clear and unobstructed hearing.
There are two options in powering this recorder. The first is an optional AC adaptor. If batteries are more useful, use the required two AA batteries; these batteries will run for up to twenty-five hours. With the LED battery level indicator you can be watchful of remaining battery time. With automatic shut-off, you can be assured that you will not be wasting batteries needlessly.
Other features include: clear voice recording system, cue and review, pause switch, stop/pause release function. The recorder's color is silver.
